It was definitely an experience to watch. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Holy shit I just got done watching it.

What a stupid movie.

And you can totally tell that they just slapped Cloverfield on the title at the last second and changed the last 5 minutes for marquee value; just like they did 10 Cloverfield Lane. But at least 10 Cloverfield Lane had a coherent plot; this one was just a bloody mess!

Ugh.

Mini rant over I guess. If you enjoyed it, good for you. But that was completely disappointing to me.

So real quick, does this movie have anything to do with Cloverfield (the giant monster) and does it answer any of the questions about it.

Well it appears to be a movie that split fans, i think i will have to take out a NetFlix trial to wait and see....

When the project was announced after 10 Cloverfield lane, i felt it seemed pretty much they will be taking the Alternative Universes/Dimensions route to Tag in how the events of Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane connect to Earth, i felt if done right it could open the door for a few more Anthology Alternative Universes movies but each would have to have something unique.

I best keep away from the Internet with this one, as i basically found out what 10 Clovefield Lane and Cloverfield were about before i even saw them.

Question, do I need to have watched the second movie (10 Cloverfield lane) to understand what is going on in this movie?

@JurassicNight

(Warning: spoilers)

Don't watch it if you're in it just for the monster. It's literally a 5 second cameo that has absolutely nothing to do with the main plot; in fact it's a Shyamalan style "what a twist!" moment right before they cut to credits. You're better off searching for it on YouTube.

The movie attempts to answer questions about its origin, but it's tacked on so hard through that last minute ending switch and a little bit of ADR radio; has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the movie.

God damn has this movie hurt J.J. Abram's reputation for me. It's so obvious he forced a ton of changes on an original screenplay just to shove it into the Cloverfield "universe" (if you can even call it that). Suddenly the weird alien scene at the end of 10 Cloverfield Lane makes a lot more sense.

Also, again, I apologize if someone reading this liked the movie. That is all power to you that you found enjoyment in it. It just really rubbed me the wrong way; especially when I looked into how it was made.

It's definitely the weakest of the Cloverfield franchise. Although I think some of the negative reactions to it are a little over-the-top.

If anything I think the added Cloverfield blemishes that Abrams and Bad Robot put into the original God Particle movie, probably elevated it. Without it, it's a cheap, poor man's Event Horizon. It largely still is.

I've started buying in to the idea that the Cloverfield franchise is just an anthology of weird ideas happening, so I'm not sure it necessarily needed the loose tie-in to the first movie. But at the same time, had it not been assimilated into the Cloverfield franchise I would have had no interest in it whatsoever. In a way, Abrams did this film a favor.

No, I disagree entirely with the sentiment that the Cloverfield elements elevated it. Elevated interest? Sure. But the quality of the movie itself? I just don't see it.

Without the forced tie ins to the Cloverfield series, it would have been an average sci fi flick with likely an ending that actually resolved many of the subplots established in the film (like that doctor's supposed ties with Germany, the one character apparently being from the other dimension and trying to escape it, the little girl the husband randomly finds in the middle of the wreckage whose story goes nowhere, the implications that time travel has something to do with this seeing how the "alt. dimension" Earth was 6 months into the future being on the opposite side of the sun with the station disappearing 6 months prior, the religious subtexts that kept coming up, etc.). But by forcing such a dramatic change, the film is littered with plot holes and incoherence. The movie just feels like the last 10 minutes were lopped off the script and rewritten entirely; the entire movie jumps from a sci fi survival drama to an action thriller complete with a sudden bad guy to fight.

And the mere practice of picking up someone else's screenplay that they had been working on for years (God Particle, the original title, was announced in 2012) and then forcing a dramatic change to the script by completely changing the ending just in order to shove it into a film series is just sickening to me. One of the slimiest business practices I've ever seen in Hollywood, to be honest. I could care less if the film made more money as a Cloverfield sequel/prequel/whatever or not; someone busted their ass fleshing out the story only to have it switched up on them like that and then passed off as if Abrams was the "genius" behind it all just by relation alone.

And the worst part about it, this isn't the first time it's happened. 10 Cloverfield Lane, while a solid movie throughout the majority of its run, had that out of nowhere alien scene at the ending. I'll bet $100 that that sequence wasn't in the original ending of the screenplay at all and they just added it on to tie it into Cloverfield. I mean for crying out loud, the original movie was called The Cellar.

And who knows. Maybe the original God Particle was even worse. But my point is I would rather see a movie with its complete concept realized rather than one that jams itself into an already established universe with no rhyme or reason other than its producer wanting it to be so.

After speaking with someone who had seen the original God Particle before its Cloverfield add-ons I can assure you there were no answers given to any of the questions you posed above--Which in part is why the Cloverfield elements elevate it. If it were already a dud, might as well add some minor blemishes of something that would keep us tuned in.

And yes, you are absolutely right the 10 Cloverfield Lane was produced in the same with a fresh ending, but at least in that film the ending works because it's played with a sense of irony.

I for one enjoy the anthology take Cloverfield is going for and I also appreciate Abrams pulling these movies under its banner from studios and execs with little to no faith in the original projects. It turns the franchise into a giant Twilight Zone/Outer Limits/Black Mirror set of standalone features. I don't think the latest film is the best example of these types of stories, but I do admire the rescue operation Abrams and Bad Robot have performed to keep these stories from getting shelved.

Should they have even made it?

"The movie just feels like the last 10 minutes were lopped off the script and rewritten entirely"

Seems to me that Paramount have a number of movie ideas around that would be LOW Budget Straight to Home Release, i.e like those shown on the Sci-Fi channel so NO SCOPE for a Theatrical Release.

It appear Paramount either started on some of these, or decided to do so and then with JJ Abrahams they think they can take a Sci-Fi movie idea on a Low Budget that may/may not do to well.

And then just Cut the Ending of these Stories to Spoon Feed in some Cloverfield Universe Connection purely to make a Movie that may have struggled to make money, to now make a bit more money.

To be fair 10 Clovefield Land minus the Cloverfield Title/Ending  would have made a interesting movie, but one that would have not made a great amount at the BOX OFFICE  as a stand alone movie Cloverfield Lane was not that bad, the Ending was not needed, but i can see how it fits if they chose to TIE it in future with Cloverfield via a extra footage added to a movie like God Particle.

Well i saw the movie, its not to bad, Plot is not to different from what has been covered before, but then how many movie Plots are Original nowadays?

I think the Story needed some changes, to make it a better Plot, i feel the Lesser Known cast acted reasonably well, some more than others it was not shocking Poor Acting.  Visually it looked good for a Lower Budget Flick.

Few Supple Clovefield Movies connections clues, less Supple than Cloverfield Lanes Space Worm Dialog.  Few Easter Eggs too.

I felt the Ending was very Tagged on though, but i wont give it away but it makes sense of some of JJ Abrahams comments on the First Movie.

Overall, a Average Flick i would say its on similar level to LIFE as far as quality overall, like a Lower Budget Space Flick than Life but looks good for a low budget.   Nothing i would be in a Rush to See again soon, but down the line it may have the odd Re-Watch Value, much like LIFE had.... which means i seen LIFE last year, but have not seen it again and i am in no real Rush to watch it again sadly.
