This year, the first Cloverfield movie celebrates its 15th anniversary and director of the 2008 found-footage thriller Matt Reeves recently sat down with SyFy to reflect on his work with that film and confirm a long-standing fan theory about the monster itself!
During the interview Reeves explains that the Cloverfield monster in the first film was only a juvenile and that its rampage through New York was a result of the monster having significant separation anxiety. Ironically the Monster was just as scared of Humans as the Humans were of it. This confirmed the same fan theory which had been floating around the internet since Cloverfield debuted 15 years ago - which was further solidified at the end of 2018's The Cloverfield Paradox when a much, much larger adult Cloverfield monster revealed itself in the film's final moments.
In related news, it was announced last year that a new Cloverfield movie was in active development and that the fourth film would be a direct sequel to the 2008 original - unlike the Twilight Zone style sequels released so far. Also unlike the original Cloverfield, the next sequel, Cloverfield 4 will not utilize the found-footage style of filmmaking and will act as a more traditional sequel.
