Was 10 Cloverfield Lane a sequel to the first Cloverfield movie? No. Was The Cloverfield Paradox a sequel or prequel to the first Cloverfield movie? No. Since J.J. Abrams introduced us to the Cloverfield monster, the cinematic universe it created had amassed quite the cult following. However, after Paradox released exclusively on Netflix, bypassing its original theatrical release, many moviegoers feared the Cloverfield brand had become nothing more than a means of capitalizing on the original film's success by flipping totally unrelated, independant, low budget projects.
This reaction has apparently forced J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot to re-evaluate their approach towards expanding the Cloververse - realizing the true value within its established mythology. At Cinemacon, Abrams addressed rumors that the upcoming film titled Overlord is not in fact a fourth Cloverfield installment but confirmed that he and Bad Robot were developing a "true, dedicated sequel" to the original Cloverfield movie:
It's refreshing to know that we will finally get a true, potentially sequential sequel to the original film and perhaps gain some answers to the plethora of questions presented. Will this sequel reference the events in 10 Cloverfield Lane or Cloverfield Paradox as well? At this point, we simply don't know. But as new details arrive, we'll be sure to keep you posted.
