Monsters come in many forms... an ambiguous tagline to this month's surprise release of 10 Cloverfield Lane reads, a film which has left many moviegoers still in the dark when it comes to what the film's plot is really about. Why are these people hiding in a bunker? What happened to the world outside? Is the Cloverfield monster still alive and will we see it?
10 Cloverfield Lane was filmed in secret and only recently began its marketing run. At first fans thought it was going to be another monster action flick, but as early reviews and even J.J. Abrams himself have pointed out - that is not the case. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a film full of questions and curiosity, not a monster movie. There are definitely links to Cloverfield, yes, but not as directly as we might expect. Critics who were given the opportunity to watch an advanced screening have praised the film for its numerous, unexpected twists and turns throughout and for doing such a great job of leaving audiences wondering "What just happened?" by the time the credits roll.
If you're expecting a monster movie, you will be disappointed. Although this film expands the 'Cloverfield' universe and sets up for more sequels, it does not follow a specific timeline set forth by Cloverfield. We don't know when 10 Cloverfield Lane takes place in relation to the first film, but throughout your viewing you will come to notice specific clues and hints which may help to answer many mysteries, including some from Cloverfield itself.
Ultimately, '10 Cloverfield Lane' will keep you guessing and keep you engaged, but may not deliver the Pacific Rim / Godzilla-style monster mayhem some of you were hoping for.
In related news, IMAX will be handing out exclusive 10 Cloverfield Lane posters to those attending the film at any of their participating locations for the first three days of the film's release:
